We Who Are About To Die gets its name from the Latin phrase Ave Caesar, morituri te salutant, or “Hail Caesar, we who are about to die salute you.”
It has been called “the pathetic salute of doomed gladiators.” Some accounts of the Roman custom include the combatants, who were often criminals, having their weapons examined by an editor before raising their hand and shouting this phrase.
The phrase makes appearances in painting, sculpture, two solo piano pieces, a Joseph Conrad novel, and one AC/DC song and album title.
It also probably never existed.
